Why We Do Not Carry EDT or Cologne
If you have shopped fragrance before, you have met the whole ladder: cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and the richest tier at the top. Fragrance Box carries only the top two rungs. We stock Eau de Parfum (EDP) and Extrait de Parfum (Extrait), and nothing lighter. That is a deliberate choice, not an oversight, and it is worth explaining plainly so you know exactly what you are getting when a box arrives.
The concentration ladder, and where we sit
Concentration is the share of aromatic oils dissolved in the alcohol base. More oil generally means richer, longer, and closer to the skin. The tiers you will see quoted across the industry, from lightest to fullest, run roughly like this.
- Eau de Cologne. The lightest, splash style, and short lived by nature.
- Eau de Toilette (EDT). Light to moderate, bright and airy, built to lift and then fade.
- Eau de Parfum (EDP). Moderate to high, the modern default for a full, lasting scent. We carry this.
- Extrait de Parfum (Extrait). The highest everyday concentration, the richest and most tenacious, usually worn in small dabs. We carry this, and it is our top tier.
One point that trips people up constantly: "Parfum," "Pure Parfum," and "Extrait de Parfum" all name the same top tier. Extrait is simply the fuller name for what people casually call Parfum. It is not a separate step above Extrait. It is the top, and it is what we mean when we say Extrait. If you want the full comparison, see EDP and Extrait, the two tiers we carry.
Why we leave EDT and cologne off the shelf
The idea behind Fragrance Box is a box you can live in, a month of scents worn one per day. That favors concentrations built to develop through their full arc and stay with you into the drydown, rather than the bright, quick openings the lighter tiers are made for.
- Longevity is the point. EDT and cologne are lovely for a fresh burst, but they are short lived by design. EDP and Extrait carry the top notes into the heart, and the heart into a base that lingers, which is the experience the box is built around.
- The wardrobe holds together. Building every box on two full tiers keeps the collection coherent. You always know a Fragrance Box scent is meant to last, so there is no guessing about which bottles are the strong ones.
- Discovery deserves the full picture. Judging a fragrance on a fleeting opening is unfair to the perfume. A fuller concentration gives you the whole composition, top to heart to base, which is what you actually want when you are learning a new scent.
A quick note on the word cologne, because it causes real confusion. In casual American English "cologne" often just means any masculine fragrance, but as a concentration it names the lightest tier, and that lightest tier is what we do not carry. You may still spot a scent in the collection with the word in its name, such as a Cologne Forte. The name is the perfumer's, not the tier. If a product page lists its tier as EDP or Extrait, that is what is in the bottle, whatever the bottle happens to be called.
Why the concentration matters, not the label
Two honest caveats keep this from sounding like a boast. First, concentration sets a ceiling and a general character, not a guarantee. A well composed EDP can outlast and out-project a poorly made Extrait, so higher is not automatically better on skin. If you want the mechanics behind that, what concentration actually means walks through it.
Second, higher concentration does not mean louder in a room. Extrait in particular often sits close and intimate while still lasting for hours, which is exactly why some people reach for it. When to choose an Extrait covers that trade off if you are deciding between the two tiers for your next box.
One thing worth setting expectations on: because the collection rotates, a specific scent can become unavailable, and we substitute a comparable one in the same character rather than an exact match. We never promise a particular bottle, but we do promise it will be EDP or Extrait, full strength, and true to the profile you chose.
If you are ready to see how the two tiers feel in practice, browse the full collection on the homepage or start a box at /order. Whichever you pick, you are choosing from EDP and Extrait, the two tiers we believe are worth wearing every day.
