How Trade Value Works

Selling, Authentication and Pre-Orders 4 min read Updated July 14, 2026

You have a bottle you no longer reach for, and you want to know what it is worth to us. That is what trade value answers. It is the figure Fragrance Box offers you for a fragrance you submit through our sell flow, and it is set for your specific bottle rather than pulled from a fixed table.

Because that number moves with the fragrance, its condition, and what is on the shelf, we never print a trade value in this guide. You will always see the real figure on your own submission page. Here is how that figure comes together and how to read it.

What trade value actually is

Trade value is the offer we make for the exact bottle you send in. It is not a retail price and it is not a public rate card. Two bottles of the same fragrance can carry different offers if one is full and boxed with papers and the other is half-filled and loose, so the value is judged per submission.

Several things shape it:

  • The fragrance itself. House, name, tier, and how sought after it currently is.
  • Fill level. A full or nearly full bottle is worth more to us than one that is mostly gone.
  • Condition and completeness. The bottle, the cap, and whether the original box, papers, or a receipt come with it.
  • Provenance. Age and origin help us place the bottle. A batch code can suggest a rough production date, but it is never proof of authenticity, so we do not treat it as one.

Every one of these is specific to your bottle, which is why the offer is specific too. The amount varies, see your live status once you submit through the sell flow.

How an offer is reached

The path is short and you stay in control the whole way. You start by submitting the bottle through a brief wizard: the bottle facts, its provenance, photos, and your own asking offer. For what belongs in a strong submission, see what you can submit to sell.

From there:

  1. You submit. Sign in first, then send the bottle facts, photos, and your asking offer.
  2. We respond with an offer or a counter offer. This is the trade value for your bottle, shown on your submission.
  3. You accept, and ship the bottle in. Nothing is final until you agree.
  4. We check it on arrival, then pay you. Payment follows once the bottle is received and confirmed.

Your submission moves through clear stages along the way, from quoted to accepted to shipped, received, and paid. You can follow each step on your private status page. For a walkthrough of those stages, see checking a sell submission's status.

Why the figure lives on the live page

An honest trade value has to reflect the bottle in front of us and the moment you submit, so any evergreen number here would be wrong for someone. That is why the offer, and any payout amount, always appears on your live submission rather than in this article. When you want the real figure for your bottle, it is on your status page, and you can review your submissions from your sell orders.

A few things worth knowing before you send anything in:

  • The offer is per bottle, not per name. Expect the value to reflect fill, condition, and completeness, not just the fragrance.
  • Your asking offer is a starting point. We may match it, counter it, or explain where we land, and you are free to decline.
  • Nothing is committed until you accept. Reviewing an offer costs you nothing and carries no obligation.

If you are weighing selling against confirming a bottle first, our authentication service is a separate path for having a fragrance verified and returned to you.

Ready to see your number

The quickest way to learn what a fragrance is worth to us is to submit it and read the offer we send back. Start at the sell flow, and if anything about your trade value is unclear once you see it, write to us at [email protected] and we will talk it through.
